TWO WORDS

James 4:7-10

In the annals of US advertising history, one of the most efficient slogans ever is the California milk producers’ two-word question, “Got milk?” With that phrase, the group captured almost everyone’s attention. In surveys, the slogan was recognized by more than 90 percent of the people polled.

If “Got milk?” is so good at reminding people to drink “cow juice,” perhaps we can create some two-word slogans to remind ourselves to live more godly lives. Let’s turn to James 4 and try it. This passage gives four specific guidelines.

1. Give in! Verse 7 tells us to submit to God. Our sovereign God loves us, so why not let Him run the show? Submission helps us resist the devil.

2. Get close! Verse 8 reminds us of the value of drawing near to God. It’s up to us to close the gap between us and God.

3. Clean up! Verse 8 also reminds us to make sure our hearts are clean. That happens through confessing our sins to God.

4. Get down! James says we need to be humble before God (v.10). That includes viewing our sin as something to weep over.

Give in! Get close! Clean up! Get down! These pairs of words may not look as good on a T-shirt as “Got milk?” But they sure will look good on us.

PRAY FOR SINGAPORE

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Saviour, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)

1. Ask God to forgive us for not praying enough for our nation and our leaders.

2. Humbly repent for any foolish remarks or petty complaints we’ve made in private or in public; and for taking God, our nation, and our leaders for granted.

3. Acknowledge God’s strong guiding hand on our nation.

4. Thank the Lord for blessing us all these years with a good government committed to integrity, service and excellence.

5. Invite the Sovereign Lord of all the earth to come preside over our political system and succession so that Singapore’s legacy of good governance and good international standing will go on from one generation to the next.

6. This General Election, fervently pray—

• That Singaporeans will think soberly and be discerning—sensitive to God’s prompting, His heartbeat, His bigger picture, His divine purpose for our nation.

• That Singaporeans will vote wisely and responsibly for candidates of exceptional character and competence. People who will inspire confidence in nation-building and the future—to see Singapore flourish (not flounder) and fulfill (not forfeit) her unique role as God’s bridge of blessing to all nations.

Lydia and family are migrating to Australia next year, 2012 but she has to go first for study reason. She flew to Brisbane on Monday, 17 January. Some of us were there to send her off. Pray that Lydia will be able to find her "place" in the new environment and be able to adjust well. So long, Lydia till then! :)

Empty Religion in God's Temple.. Too busy for God?

It seems that everyone in our culture wants to have lots going on. Maybe we use busyness to help us know we're valued, or may be it's just the by-product of too many options. It's just hard to say no when there are so many wonderful things to say YES to. Whatever the case may be, if we're too busy for God, we're just too busy. Period. If you find yourself in this situation, read on. These are some helpful ways to make time for God spite of a busy day or busy life.

1. Make time with God a priority.

You’ve probably heard it said that we find time for what we really care about. You probably take the time to brush your hair and get ready each morning. Most likely you gibe some attention to responding to important calls or e-mails. And you don’t miss out on important conversations with that someone special when he calls or stops by. So why is it that time with God is often the last thing on our list? We do it if we find extra time, but when other things come up; it’s sometimes the first thing to go.

Could it be that we know God will forgive us? I mean, that’s his specialty, right? And we can’t always be assured our teacher will forgive us if we’re late or that a friends will overlook an unreturned call. So we take advantage of his forgiveness, knowing that he’ll be waiting for us the next time. But why not just set time with God as our top priority? That way other things may not get done or other people may not hear back from us, but God will. We just determine that time with him is the last thing we toss out on a busy day. If you’re willing to make that commitment, stop right now and pray. Ask him to help you commit to spending time with him each day, whether it is first thing in the morning, right after school, or before bed.

2. Say not to something else.

While it’s not popular to say no to opportunities that come up, sometimes we just have to if we’re going to make time with God a top priority. Maybe you’re involved in something that takes so much of your time that you’re unable to keep your commitment to spend time alone with God. If could be a particular extracurricular activity or interest. If this is the case, consider cutting back time spent on this activity. Or you might even want to take a break from it altogether. You can always get involved in that activity later. The world won’t end. I promise. And you might even find that you enjoy having a little free time where you can explore other interests.

Or maybe you are involved in a relationship that takes so much of your time that it’s hard for you to squeeze in time with God. Here’s a radical though. Why not turn down the intensity of your relationship? If the other person doesn’t understand, you don’t need to be pouring all of the time into that relationship anyway.

When I was in high school, a friend of mine decided that she was going to give up dating for a season so that she could focus more on her relationship with God. You may not want to do this, or you may be thinking you wish you had a dating life to take a break from, but there may be something else you want to eliminate so you can spend more time with God. It could be time spent on the computer, watching TV, or shopping. Saying no to something else will mean that you can say yes to the very best of all—Jesus.

Maybe you remember the story of Mary and Martha in the Bible. Martha was very busy. She would have fit in beautifully in our world. But Mary chose to spend time with Jesus. She knew what was most important. She remembered what would matter in the course of forever. Jesus corrected Martha for the way she chose to live her life and praised Mary for her choices. Luke 10:41-42 says, “The Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her.’”

Which person do you identify with more? Will you choose the many things that really don’t make a difference or the one thing that is absolutely critical? Make the right choice like Mary—and you won’t regret it. Ever.

3. Schedule time with God.

If you’re going to stay consistent in spending time with God, you have got to set aside the time each day to do it. Make an appointment with God. It might be in the morning or the evening. It could be during lunch or right after school. What works best for you? For many the morning is the best time to spend time with God. Before the day begins with all of its distractions and temptations you can focus on his Word and his perspective.

But what if you’re not a morning person? That’s OK. You’ll just have to plan so you can make it up in the morning. You’ll want to set your alarm earlier and maybe even have some loud tunes pumping. Do whatever you can to wake up, whether that means a cool shower or a tall glass of OJ. Getting up to spend time with God is simply a habit that you can work into your day like taking a shower or brushing your teeth. You wouldn’t leave the house without combing your hair because it’s become a part of your morning ritual. The more mornings you spend with God, the more this will be an irreplaceable step to your morning as well.

4. Ask a friend for help.

Have you ever noticed that we have an easier time keeping our commitment when we know someone else has made the same one? I used to workout with a friend every morning at six. Now you can bet I wouldn’t have dragged myself out of bed if I didn’t know she was waiting for me. Having this friend to hold me accountable helped me keep my commitment to getting in shape.

It’s the same way in our relationship with God. If you know you want to get up each morning for time alone with God but also know you could qualify as an Olympic medalist in pushing the snooze bar, ask a friend to help you. Now I don’t mean that she comes to your house and kicks you out of bed. Just agree together to pray for the other one. And then ask each other how you are doing. You may even want to make a deal together. When each of you has consistently gotten up to spend time with God for a week, you could treat each other to ice cream or some other fun treat. Over time you’ll understand that the real reward is getting to know more of God, but it doesn’t hurt to build in a little incentive when you hold each other accountable.

With Friends Like That....

Do you remember a time when you realized that a "friend" wasn't quite a real friend? I do. Real friends are sometimes hard to find, but when you discover one, you have received one of God's best gifts. How do you know if you've got an authentic, stick-with-you-through-it-all kind of friends? See if she/he matches up to God's definition of an authentic friend found in His word.

Stands with you through good and bad times. "A Friends loves at all times." Proverbs 17:17

Everyone wants to be your friend when you make the cheer-leading squad or score a date with Mr. Wonderful. But what about if you get dumped or you trip in the lunchroom? How about when you stand up for the right thing even though it's the unpopular decision? Will your friend support you, or will she laugh and go the way of the crowd? A true friend stick with you even though it may not be a convenient or popular choice.

Respects you enough to protect what you tell her/him. "Whoever conceals an offense promotes love, but whoever gossips about it separates friends." Proverbs 17:9

Ever had a friend who can't keep her/his mouth shut? About an hour after you tell her/him something, she/he has broadcast it to about twenty other people. Then before you know it, everyone in your school district knows your private business. Trust is a vital trait found in authentic friends. Ask God to bring you a friend who will keep the big and small.

Makes choices based on the wisdom of God. "The one who walks with the wise become wise, but a companion of fools will suffer harm." Proverbs 13:20

A true friend won't ask you to compromise what you believe. She/he will encourage you to make the right choice rather than tempt you to make the wrong one. She/he will choose based on what's wise rather than on what's popular. This kind of friend is crucial because, as the Bible says, you become like the people you spend time with.

Encourages you in your spiritual walk. "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17

A real friend challenges you to follow Christ. She/he knows that you'll be happiest and most fulfilled when your purpose is to pursue God. She prays for you, shares what she's/he's learning from God's Word, and encourages you to put Him first. This kind of friend will help you stay on tract and spur you on in your walk with Christ.

Now take a few minutes to think about the kind of friend you are.

Are you the type who stands with friends, even when it's not easy to do?
Do you encourage them to follow the narrow road that Jesus calls us to?
Are you trustworthy?

Take a few minutes to pray that you will be a genuine friend. Remember: you have to be a friend to have a friend.

Focus on becoming the kind of friend you would like to have. That's a good place to start.

Follow-up is the term used for grounding someone in the essential Christian life, giving them the basic tools and teaching they need to move forward in their faith.

Refiner's Fire

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.

That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining Silver.

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says: 'He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.'

She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time.

The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, 'How do you know when the silver is fully refined?'

He smiled at her and answered, ' Oh, that's easy—when I see my image in it.'

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has His eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.

The Use of Tongues in Worship

Pastoral Note: The Use of Tongues in Worship

Speaking in Tongues has been described as a controversial gift. Some propose that speaking in tongues has ceased after the age of the apostles. Some say that speaking in tongues is of the devil. Yet, there are also others who say that we should speak in tongues but as a form of “private devotion’ to Jesus. In other words, speaking in tongues is a private experience between a believer and God and should not be spoken in public worship. There are also others who propose that speaking in tongues should be practice in church without restraint. Who is right? How do we navigate through the issue of speaking in tongues in worship?

We will look briefly at 1 Corinthians 12-14, to discover some guidelines for speaking in tongues in public worship. (You will need to read the passage as a whole for yourselves to understand better where I am coming from).

Paul was concerned about the unity of the believers in 1 Corinthians. Apparently, there was divisiveness in the body of believers over certain issues (which we would not have time to elaborate in this article). Tongues were used in a charismatic environment as an end to itself. In other words, believers who could speak in tongues thought they were more “spiritual” than those who do not.

The main point which I would want to bring across is that Paul was instructing the believers in the proper use of tongues for the building up of the body of believers in a public worship setting. He is not saying we should not speak in tongues in corporate worship. He is saying: “Use it in a right way. Don’t abuse the gift!”

In 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, Paul says that there are varieties of gifts but the same God who activates the gift in the community of believers. The manifestation of the gifts is not for individual good but clearly for the common good of believers. Speaking in tongues and also the interpretation of tongues is spoken of as a gift given to believers as they gather in public worship.

Paul clearly also says that the community of believers have different gifts as a result not all posses the gift of healing, not all can speak in tongues not all can interpret tongues. (See 1 Cor. 12:30)

In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul exhorts the believers to pursue love as the greater gift. “As for prophecies, they will come to an end, as for tongues, they will cease, as for knowledge it will come to an end.” (See 1 Cor. 13:8). In other words, Paul is saying knowledge, tongues and prophecy are the lesser gifts compared with love. Love is the foundational gift. If we have not the love that builds up the community of believers and desire the “common good,” all our speaking, prophesying and tongue-speaking will be in vain.

In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul focuses on two spiritual gifts in particular: prophecy and tongues. As we read this passage, we need to keep in mind two things.

Firstly, Paul was addressing the issue of divisiveness and appealing for unity in the body of believers. He made a strong appeal for unity in the body especially in 1 Corinthians 12: 14-26. (Go read it!)

Secondly, he is saying pursue what that builds up or edifies the body in love (1 Cor. 12).
Paul’s main concern according to Ben Witherington III, is that Corinthian worship should manifest intelligibility (1 Cor. 14:1-25) and order (1 Cor. 14:26-40).

In 1 Corinthians 14:1-25, he is advocating prophecy (edification and intelligibility) over speaking in tongues in public worship. His arguments seem to be along these lines:
1. Those who speak in tongues do not speak to other people but to God. Tongue-speaking is “speaking mysteries in the Spirit.” (v.2)
2. Edification is the benchmark by which to measure what goes on in public worship. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:5: “Now I would like all of you to speak in tongues but even more to prophesy. One who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless one interprets, so that the church may be built up.” (v.3-5)
3. If Paul comes to the Corinthians and speak only in tongues, it would have no positive effect to the believers unless he brings in some revelation, prophecy or knowledge. He draws from the analogy of instruments that produces sound to further emphasize his point that in a public gathering intelligibility is crucial for people to understand what is spoken so that the body of believers may be built-up. (v.6-12)
4. One who speaks in a tongue should pray for power to interpret. (v.13) In other words, Paul is not saying that we should not speak in tongues in public worship, but pray for the power to interpret that the tongue will edify the believers.
5. Paul encourages the believers to pray with their spirit and also pray with their mind. (v.15)
6. In 1 Corinthians 14:19, Paul sustains his argument for intelligibility and edification by saying that in a community setting, he would rather speak five words with his mind (that people can understand) than ten thousand words in a tongue.
7. In 1 Corinthians 14:22-25, Paul use the illustration of an unbeliever than comes to church. Prophecy will in some case bring conviction to the unbeliever, however, tongues may result in a turn off as the unbeliever might think that the church is out of their mind.

Paul institutes a certain order in charismatic worship in 1 Corinthians 14:26-30. He emphasizes again the importance of all things to be done for the building up of the body (v.26).

The order for speaking in tongues is that if one speaks in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three and each in turn. One should interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let them be silent in church and speak to themselves and to God. (v.27-28)

It is important to note certain pre-suppositions in early church worship and not impose our understanding of Sunday Service Worship into Paul’s setting.

Dunn explains that 1 Corinthians 14:26 gives us a clue about one form of Christian worship. There is no mention of worship leaders or of reading the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament). Rather, each brings a song (perhaps sung in the Spirit), a teaching or a revelation. The impression is of a real act of the body, not merely the performance of a noted few.

So what is the way forward? Is public speaking of tongues allowed in public worship in church today?

Some Guidelines
I would propose that we can’t just read 1 Corinthians 14 and come to conclusions that speaking in tongues is disallowed unless there is interpretation or that the order of worship should be that one or two speak in tongues and one will interpret if not they are to be silent in church. It is not so cut and dry. (For one, we don’t worship in the same context in Corinth.)

In the verses following (1 Corinthians 14:34-35), Paul says that women should be silent in church, Should we then not permit women to speak today since they are to be silent?

1 Corinthians was written in a particular social context where in a public worship, spontaneity was encouraged. As a result, there were abuses as many pride themselves for the “superior” gift of tongues over others. We can’t just transplant what he wrote to Corinth and make it a rule of the thumb for churches today.

As a principle of Biblical interpretation, we should take note of the difference between what is contextual (how we should exercise tongue speaking in church) and what is timeless in principle (the focus of building up the body of believers).

In light of 1 Corinthians 12-14, I would propose that in a church setting, we should speak words that are intelligible and would edify one another. We should also not disallow speaking in tongues in public worship but rather pray for its interpretation that the body of believers may be edified and built-up.

A Change of Season

The passing of time seems to be one certain thing we can count on. It was like yesterday that I came to this dear church, and I have already been here for more than three years. I guess by now, most of you would have heard that I will be leaving YCCA officially by the end of this November.

Since handed over the responsibilities of the youth ministry, informally, to Ps Daniel Teo, I have not written for the youth bulletin for about seven months. It is with a heavy heart that I write this last article as your youth pastor, for it is near the closing of a chapter of my ministry here.

The first law of motion by Isaac Newton states that, “Everything continues in a state of rest unless it is compelled to change by forces impressed upon it.” My state of rest was very much disturbed when the Archbishop told me that he would assign me to All Saints’ Church w.e.f. from 1 Dec 09. It is to fill a position vacated by a pastor who will himself be posted to another church. Both of us accepted his decisions as we believe in submitting to God’s anointed leadership. Beyond that we know that it’s ultimately the sovereign will and purpose of our divine Lord.

I was approached to come to serve in this family of faith in September 2005 at a critical time of need, and I am now being called to move on to serve at another church likewise to meet a time of pressing need. I pray my tasks at YCCA have been fulfilled and I know the Lord has prepared caring and capable leaders in Ps Daniel, Ps Dani & Ps Victor to take my place as your shepherd in Christ. I leave feeling assured that you are in the good hands of these godly pastors.

I was with my first church for more than 16 years. YCCA is the church which I have served the next longest, for more than four years (including a year of placement in 2002 when I was a theological student). It is certainly no easy and heartaching for me to leave a church which I have known as home.

In one of his devotional, Henri Nouwen wrote, “Every time we make the decision to love someone, we open ourselves to great suffering, because those we most love cause us not only great joy but also great pain. The greatest pain comes from leaving … the pain of the leaving can sometimes tear us apart. Still, if we want to avoid the suffering of leaving, we will never experience the joy of loving. And love is stronger than fear, life stronger than death, hope stronger than despair. We have to trust that the risk of loving is always worth taking.”

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; He hath made every thing beautiful in his time.” Ecclesiastes 3:1,4, 11a

Twenty Time-Tested Tactics for Improving Your People Skills

This is a conclusion from a recent Wall Street Journal survey of more than 2,000 corporate recruiters: "Interpersonal communication and other so-called soft skills are what corporate recruiters crave most, but find most elusive in MBA programs."

Did you get that? Communication skills. Interpersonal skills. People skills. That's what recruiters are looking for more than anything else when they seek to fill management slots. Sure, the recruiters seek the "hard" skills, too. They want you to know strategy and economics, how to analyze the financials, how to examine statistical data, and so on. But the soft skills are currently king of the skill hill. Perhaps they should have been all along.

Need more evidence of the value of people skills? Listen to the recruits as well as to the recruiters. A survey of 1,500 graduates from eighteen full-time MBA programs, conducted by the leading B-school accrediting body, found that graduates rated "one-on-one communication" as the most important workplace skill. However, only six percent of these alums considered their business school better than "moderately effective" in helping them develop in that area.

Interesting findings, aren't they? People who can get things done through others—those who can persuade, those who can motivate, those who are liked and who get along well with others—stand the best chance at becoming effective leaders in the workplace (and the best chance at getting the jobs in the first place). Interesting indeed, but hardly path-breaking. We've known this for decades. Just look at How to Win Friends and Influence People, the perennial bestseller. It made the same argument as far back as 1936!

Want to be a great leader? Want to succeed in your career? The word is out: your interpersonal skills are critical. At work, in the home, at church, around the neighborhood and just about everyplace else, these skills can make or break your ability to get things done.

A Plethora of Powerful Practices
A quick truth-in-advertising disclaimer: what's said in this article has been said before. These human relations practices certainly predate me and they predate 1936. In fact, they've been handed down through the ages. They are time-honored and battle-tested. They've been published in myriad forms by myriad authors. That's because they're powerful practices. They work. They'll improve your life and the lives of those around you.
The list below is not an exhaustive list, of course—you could no doubt add to it—but I hope that you'll find it to be a helpful primer for how you can perfect your own people skills.

1. Don't complain. It's been said (and rightly so) that we shouldn't bother complaining. Eighty percent of the people won't care and the other twenty percent think you deserve what you're getting! But if you prefer scriptures to quip-tures (yes, I know that's not a word, but it does rhyme nicely), consider the Apostle Paul's admonition to the Philippians: "Do everything without complaining or arguing" (Phil. 2:14). It doesn't get you very far because people tend to react negatively to toxic talk. Instead, offer potential solutions when you identify problems, or say nothing at all.

2. Smile a lot. Check out that mug of yours in the mirror. Do you usually have a "no" face or a "yes" face? Does your expression tell the world to leave you alone or that you're friendly and approachable? My guess is that Jesus smiled a lot. After all, the fruit of the Spirit is joy.
Try this out, just for today. I'm serious—experiment with this. Make yourself smile, even if you don't feel like it. Do it consistently throughout the day and then watch how others respond to you. You'll be pleasantly surprised (and they might be too!).

3. Listen closely and actively. When I was in grade school, my grandfather often said to me (in a distinctly Italian accent): "You hear but you don't listen!" He was usually right. I could parrot back what was said to me, but I didn't really process it, much less obey it. When it comes to interpersonal relations, that's a blunder bigger than the lasagna that mama used to make. And the result is frustration and repetition—frustration because nothing incenses a speaker quite like the feeling of being ignored; repetition because the speaker will try to remedy the problem by repeating what he or she just said.
But try this instead. Make a real effort to listen to everything that's being said to you. Concentrate on it rather than letting your mind wander to something more interesting—or to what you want to say in response. Then, especially if there is the potential for disagreement or misunderstanding, paraphrase what the person has attempted to communicate to you. Be patient here and briefly summarize his concerns, points, or ramblings as a preface to your own rejoinder. That person will know that he's been heard. Then, in reciprocation, he'll be more likely to listen to you.
You'll reap what you sow here. Communication will improve, guaranteed. So will the relationship. And you'll never again have to worry about getting tugged around by the ear because you hear but you don't listen.

4. Make them feel important. Lack of affirmation and respect may be reaching epidemic proportions in our narcissistic society. At home, at work, and everywhere else, people seem to be starving to hear that they're important and relevant. So feed them. Let them know you think they're working real hard, that they're doing a great job—that they're contributing; that who they are and what they do has genuine value. Try it with your spouse, with your employees, with your friends, with your pastor. Be an encourager and an affirmer. There is no straighter pathway to building up people and building your relationships.

5. Show your appreciation. Gratitude is a cousin of affirmation. When someone has expended some effort from which you benefit—even if it's something they're expected to do—let them know that you appreciate it. Make a habit of expressing gratitude. People feel entitled to it and when it's withheld, resentment fills the vacuum. By contrast, when you express gratitude, you can instantly make that person's day.
So thank your spouse for taking out the trash or for doing the dishes, not just for the special things. Thank your employees for their effort, even if it doesn't always produce fruit. Thank the mailman for being so reliable. Then watch their faces brighten. Gratitude costs you nothing and it gives them much.

6. Talk about their interests. Try this the next time you're at some stuffy social function. Make a game of it, if you'd like. Rather than hoping for opportunities to tell people how great you are, and rather than just making small talk about the five day forecast, talk about the other person's interests. Set yourself aside for the evening and become interested in those around you. This person is a secretary and a mother? Ask about the job and about her kids. That person has a Star Trek shirt. Ask about Star Trek. It doesn't matter that you don't really care about Mr. Spock or understand that ear condition of his. The person you're speaking to is a fan, so start there. People love to talk about their interests, so give them the opportunity to do so.
By the way, this technique works outside of parties as well. Try it the next time you see that neighbor who's been giving you a hard time.

7. Remember every name. Some people have an uncanny ability for remembering names. The rest of us find creative ways to hide the fact that we've forgotten them. "Hello, friend. Oh, hi there buddy. Welcome, brother. Great to see all of you again!"
It's been said that someone's name is the sweetest word that person ever hears, so do whatever it takes to make that sweet sound. You'll do more than impress them. You'll make them feel memorable.

8. Make a sacrifice for them. Words are powerful, but few of your words will be more treasured than a sincere sacrifice of time or money on your part. So get in the habit of identifying and meeting people's needs. Be kind. Put their needs ahead of your own. Let the overworked mother drop off her kids at your house for an afternoon and then tell her you'll take care of returning them. And while you're at it, bring a pizza for their dinner. When that mom thanks you lavishly for going out of your way to bring dinner, just say: "hey, the pizza place was only an extra mile!" She'll get it.
Nothing—nothing—will earn you more real friends than sacrifice. And if you're evangelically-minded, nothing will earn you the right to be heard on important issues like your faith.

9. Use self-depreciating humor. Don't hesitate to make fun of yourself. In a world where people are so full of themselves and incessantly concerned about communicating their own importance, self-depreciating humor can instantly make you attractive. So go ahead. Make fun of your flaws. Knock yourself down a few notches. Paradoxically, it will probably raise you up in the eyes of others.

10. Focus on your similarities. Lots of research bears witness to what might already be obvious to you: we're more likely to be influenced by people who are similar to us. If you've been there too, if you've endured their pain, if you look and talk and dress like they do, they'll probably like you more. They'll listen to you more. They'll confide in you more.
So center on the similar. Even if you have a scant one percent commonality with somebody at work, focus 100 percent of your conversation on that commonality when you can. Some people call that the "101 Percent Principle." Others call it being "as shrewd as a serpent."

11. Create "social relaxation". That has nothing to do with offering your guest an easy chair. It has everything to do with creating an environment where people are relaxed in your presence and feel comfortable talking to you. How do you do that? For the most part, through an amalgam of the practices listed here. Smile, compliment them, focus on their needs, and express a real interest in them. Ease into tougher discussions—warm-up to them—rather than being so direct. And always show them you are paying attention by making good eye contact, by nodding your head when you understand what they're saying, and by squarely facing them rather than sitting at an angle. Be genuine, transparent, and accepting—even loving—and you will almost always reap the same in return.

12. Talk about your own mistakes while raising theirs. You might be a perfectionist, but you're not perfect. If you want to get somebody to listen to you about mistakes they've made, start by identifying your own. Believe me, they'll certainly listen to that! As you do, you'll make it safer for them to own up to their faults.

13. Don't assume you're right. This assumption derails more conversations, starts more fights, and extinguishes more potentially great ideas than any other. I'm not always right. That's pretty obvious. But in a conversation or a debate, that somehow becomes less obvious to me. And then it creates problems.
When I assume that my opinion is right and that someone who disagrees with me is wrong, I've lost the opportunity to learn from that person and to generate a win-win solution. Moreover, I just seem to get more entrenched in my position. That's stubborn. That's folly. And that's pride. I should humbly accept that I don't have all the answers, and that someone—even someone who is criticizing me—might have a good point.
If you sometimes have this problem too, one remedy is to change your mind-set—to consider the dialogue a "learning conversation." That is, conceptualize the conversation as an opportunity to learn something, rather than as a joust. Glean what you can from the other person. Maybe your colleague really does have some information you don't. Maybe your mother-in-law actually does have some wisdom she can pass along to you. Once we make that mental leap from pushing our point to engaging in a learning conversation, we reap self-improvement, better ideas, and better relationships. And we reduce the number of times that we'll have to use practice #14.

14. Apologize. Just say it. Go ahead. It won't kill you. Besides, you probably owe it to the person. Repeat after me: "I…was…wrong. I'm…sorry." Tack on a "please forgive me" and you'll be liberated indeed. Beware, though. The resulting rush of peace may cause you to smile. You'll then look just like the person you're talking to.

15. Never, ever gossip—ever. Many people don't even realize they're doing it, bonding with someone by tarnishing someone else's reputation. That's gossip, plain and simple. If what you're about to say undermines the reputation of someone who's not in the conversation, think first about why you're really saying it. Then, in most cases, bite your lip.

16. Don't interrupt when someone is speaking. And never complete their thought for them either. These behaviors infuriate most people. If you have this problem, re-read practice #3 (active listening). Then, make a new screen saver for yourself that says "Shut up and listen!"

17. Never say "you're wrong". Think about how you felt the last time someone said those exact words to you. Did it help to resolve the problem, or did it escalate it? These words rarely persuade, so excommunicate them from your vocabulary. And please, don't tell me I'm wrong about this.

18. Don't communicate when you're angry. Sometimes it's unavoidable, but often it's not. Most of us do an exceedingly poor job of making our point clear when our brains are clouded by anger. And then we get even angrier—at ourselves for not communicating well—spiraling the problem. Just step away and count to thirty. Yeah, yeah—that approach is clichd, but I'll tell you something: it works.
One quick corollary while we're on the topic: never send an email when you're mad. Same rule, different venue. If you send it, your diatribe will be on record for all posterity! So just say no to angry emails.

19. Make self-examination a habit. Am I using these skills daily? Where can I improve? What's working and what's not? As with any self-improvement process, you need to take inventory regularly regarding how you're doing. Reflect on your people skills often and then find ways to improve on your weaknesses.

20. Practice these practices. People skills are like any other skills. The more you use them, the more adept you become. So if you're serious about "perfecting" your people skills, there's no shortcut. Only practice will make perfect.

Preparing for a Permanent Relationship

A positive aspect of a period of singleness is the time for personal housekeeping and putting your life in order. This is the time for individual evaluation and growth. As you discover areas in which you need to develop discipline, seek the help of the Holy Spirit in those areas. Strive to improve your life, not just to become attractive to or prepared for a potential mate, but to please the Lord.

How do you measure up in each of the following areas?

Spiritual Life
Every Christian needs a committed devotional life. How is your personal relationship with the Lord, and the body of believers? Do you

Read the Word systematically for understanding and guidance? (John 15:1-14)
Commune with the Lord, regularly, offering thanks and praise, making your request known to Him? (I Thessalonians 5:17, Philippians 4:6)
Faithfully attend church? (Hebrews 10:25)
Fellowship with the body of believers, caring and sharing together? (Galatians 6:2)
Exercise your spiritual gifts? (Ephesians 4:7-14)
Memorize Scripture? (Psalms 119:11)
Have the fruit of the Spirit evident in your life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control? (Galatians 5:22,23)
Live a forgiven life? (1 John 1:9-2:3)

Home Cleanliness

The way you keep your home is a reflection of your personal priorities. Do you:

Have a regular schedule of housekeeping?
Keep your home reasonably clutter-free?
Maintain the home in good repair?
Keep up your yard?
Drive a clean car?

Personal Hygiene and Appearance
If we as Christians truly accept the concept that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20), we might become better keepers of His house. Do you:

Eat a well-balanced, sensible diet?
Exercise regularly?
Keep yourself clean and well-groomed?
Dress modestly and attractively?
Relax frequently?
Get sufficient rest?
Watch your health?
Treat your body as the temple of the Holy Spirit?

Finances

Financial responsibility is often a problem. Although most of those having money problems cite inadequate incomes or resources as the cause, the real culprit is usually poor management of what they do have. Do you:

Have and live within a reasonable budget?
Resist impulse buying, unnecessary purchases, or things you cannot afford
Save regularly?
Plan and save for large purchases or investments?
Have adequate insurance (car, health, dental)? '
Keep your checkbook balanced?
Honor God with your tithes and offerings? (1 Corinthians 16:1,2)
Use extra money to help needy brothers and sisters in the Lord? (2 Corinthians 8:13-15; 9:10 -11)

Personal Responsibility

One of the basics of a good relationship is trust. And trust is built by making and keeping commitments. If you want someone to trust you enough to want to spend the rest of his life with you, then you must demonstrate your trustworthiness in all of your relationships. Do you:

Accept responsibilities joyfully?
Follow through with plan/promises on a timely basis?
Take commitments seriously?
Keep the confidences of others?
Genuinely care about others?
Maintain a servant attitude in your relationships?
Find that people consider you a responsible adult?
Trust others?

Family Life

Our relationship with our parents and siblings are a good indicator of how we will relate to spouse and children, for we tend to repeat familiar habit patterns. How are you disposed toward them?

1. Available?
2. Interested?
3. Loving?
4. Giving?
5. Forgiving?
6. Gentle?
7. Empathetic?
8. Honest?
9. Uncritical and accepting?
10. Encouraging?
11. Helpful?
12. Serving?

If you have discovered some areas in which you need to grow, sit down and develop goals in those areas. Then write out a detailed plan to reach each goal you have set. Assign starting and completion dates to each step of your plans. And implement your plans. Finally, periodically review your progress and celebrate your successes. You are becoming conformed to the image of Christ.

Would You Date You?

The decisive question is “would you date you?” Knowing yourself as well as you do, could you honestly say that you are everything you would look for in a date? If not, then you probably have some growing to do (along with the rest of us).

howdy ho! this update is so overdue it's almost obscene, but better late than never, right? right.
here are the long-awaited pictures for our teens' fellowship outing @ henderson walk :) there's a major lack of good photos though, in addition to the fact that i do not have the photos taken by dani yet, but i hope you enjoy this anywise.

this was not exactly part of the outing, but we were at vivocity having lunch at food republic, and we decided to get out onto the roof(?) of the mall. the colours of the sky and the place were amazing.

ryan taught some of us this neat spinning-on-a-bar thing.

Captured Memories of UHU CAMP

Wow! It's just too marvelous to experince how faithful our Daddy GOD is! He is faithful to bring us thru the Teens Camp this year... :)

1) We see God's hands brought us to the Home TeamNS, which we only got the confirmation 1 month before the actual day of the camp!

2) It's not an coincident that Estella is in the Teens Comm, without her help we won't get a CHEAP chalet to rent. It's only S$148 for 3 days 2 nights! Praise the LORD!
3) Wanteng had a good food-connection that can provide our meals by delivering to our chalet's doorstep without any delivery charge! Wooo...! The food was great! Ask Wanteng if you want to order :)
4) Thank GOD for genius, creative & *sparkling* guys like Wei Yi & Victor who arranged the games. Everyone was having a great time with the MR MUD! *guest what?

5) God stopped the rain just before the BBQ till 5am! How could this be if not God was doing the miracle cuz the cloud was so dark and it's never stops raining. (We were thinking, maybe because we had UHU theme as "Under HIS Umbrella", God was allowing the rain to be poured out and that's why we need umbrella to cover us.. hee..)

6)Praise the LORD for EVERYONE in the TEENS!! You ROCKS!

7) The last but not least... We thank the LORD for seeing us thru the UHU Camp. We really enjoyed HIS presence & being together with HIM was so AMAZING.. We won't exchange this with anything in our life... :)

IGNITE 2008

IGNITE '08 was an awesome experience! Yes, maybe for some of you, especially those who are not 'student', feel that "it is not for me" or "I shouldn't be here" or "I am in the wrong place". But actually it was a great moment when we can come to re-learn again what is evangelism all about and put it into your own situation or position whether you are in the army or polytechnic or university or even work pleace. Evangelism is common topic but quite often to be neglected.

It is the part when all representative of Secondary Schools, Polytechnics, ITEs, Universities come together in the stage and pray for their schools or campus, that's the time I felt that we really need the hands of GOD to work in us in order for us to reach out to the lost ones. For it is impossible to depend on our own who are full of excuses and limitations.

One thing that I learned is about giving my life as a temple of God; making myself as temple of GOD which means making myself available for other to have access to God; making my life as a house of prayer; and to keep it holy by God's grace and mercy.

At first, ya, I am here because I have to, because it is my responsibility to be here, because I am one of the Youth pastoral workers. I just told the Lord to speak to me specifically as I spent my time with the youths here, I don't want to waste my time!

God really did do something in my heart as I opened my life to Him during the whole three nights I spent in the IGNITE '08. My heart was melting when we all prayed together and I don't have school to pray about, but suddenly I remembered all teens in the XXON Youth. Hey, we made of many schools around Singapore and most of them are not here! So I started to pray for all the teens. I realized that YCCA also surrounded by many different levels of schools, too! I think it wasn't an coincident, YCCA there to be the light that lead people to GOD.

We can change some body's world before we can change the world. We can start little but start it with GOD who can do more than we could ever think or pray. So, let's see salvation in very selfish way but breaking our hearts for what breaking God's, and it can be done in and thru you!

Update on Chin Wan Teng

Hi Peeps,

For some of you may know that Wan Teng is embarking into fulltime ministry with Singapore Campus Crusade for Chris after she graduated from Republic Polytechnic with a Diploma in Biomedical Science.
To start with, now she is doing SOLEAD (School Of Leadership And Development) on 29th Aug 2007-May 2008.
After 3 months of intensive classroom equipping course, now she is doing practical field ministry at Temasek Polytechnic & Republic Polytechnic. In this SOLEAD Wan Teng learns to build core foundation for a life-long commitment to live for Christ, to have a personal life change, to do ministry effectively and to be a transformed leader.
It's a privilage that on 16th January Daniel & I were invited to attend update meeting on Wan Teng ministry at GCTC (Great Commission Training Center) at Buona Vista.

I was encouraged by her step of faith and how awesome is our God to see Wan Teng's life changed! And also to see how faithful God is in meeting Wan Teng's needs knowing that she is not working during the course. I think it needs just a simple step of faith and trusting God for the rest if God really calls you into fulltime ministry.
Let's support our missionary in any ways we can! Yes, Wan Teng you are not alone! :)

New Year, New Fellowship Groups

It's a such great joy to see many people from different level of ministry (teens, youths, and young adults) came together for a time of fellowship last night. Overwhelmed with joy to know that a huge number of youths turned up! Glory to GOD!=)

This year XXON Youth turns Cell Groups into Fellowship Groups. There are three Fellowships:
1. Teens (Secondary Level Students). Please contact Dani if you are interested to join this fellowship group.
2. Youths (JC, Poly & NS men). Please contact Daniel if you are interested to join this fellowship group.
3. Young Adults (Uni & young working adults). Please contact Victor if you are interested to join this fellowship group.
All are welcome!

The word fellowship comes from the Greek word "koinonia" which means communion, sharing or fellowship. It is a derivative of "koinos" the word for common. Thus, fellowship carries with it an understanding of commonness.

To create a bond between comrades is the meaning of koinonia when people are recognized, share their joys and pain together, and are united because of their common experiences, values and goals. This mutual bond overrides each individual's pride, vanity and individualism, fulfilling the human yearning for fraternity, belonging and companionship.

"Let us think of ways to motivated one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of HIS return is drawing near." (Hebrew 10:24-25)
